APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) 20 surviving Pearl Harbor veterans from our area are preparing for a trip back to Hawaii. The group ranges in age from 88 to 94 will go as part of the Northeast Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight.
On Thursday, they're taking the veterans to the site of the attack to privately tour naval and military bases and other historic landmarks from the day of infamy.
92 year old Clyde Stephenson was stationed as a marine aboard the U.S.S. California when hell broke loose.
"I could see they were getting ready to draft guys so that's why I voluntarily went in. I didn't have money to keep going to school. I was broke," he reflects.
Organizers are looking for large crowds to show up to welcome the veterans home. If you're interested, you can gather at 11:45 next Tuesday morning in the parking lot next to Appleton's Candlewood Suites on College Avenue.
