FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) After meeting in Fond du Lac on Thursday night, DNR officials will head to Rhinelander Friday evening to gather input about Wisconsin's upcoming wolf hunt.
Governor Walker authorized the hunt back in April after the bill passed into law by Madison legislators. This came as a reaction to a growing population. The state has a population goal of roughly 350 gray wolves across the state. Current estimates have that number somewhere close to 800.
Public meetings will help the DNR draft quotas, locations for the hunt and permit levels. "They cause problems for ranchers and farmers and 100 permits have already been issued because of issues with live stock in the past," say Wisconsin DNR Wildlife Ecology Chief Bill Vander Zouwen.
The Wisconsin DNR will meet next month in Stevens Point to determine the specifics of the hunt and they will take citizen comments into consideration.
