GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) Packing for the beach? A new mobile app promises sun, sand and safety.

The Great Lakes Commission just launched a free app that provides weather forecasts, wind advisories and beach water conditions all at your fingertips. Funded by the EPA, the data is taken from several state agencies and updated every hour. The information includes over 1800 Great Lakes beaches.

Christine Manninen, spokesperson for the Great Lakes Commission says, "It's a great tool in protecting human health against bacterial contamination."

Local 5 spoke with beachgoers at Point Beach State Forest who think the app will be very helpful.

John Dinegan from Ripon says the riptides can be the most dangerous. He's glad that information is now available.

"People need to be aware because it can be just one or two feet of water and people can get into bad situations. You wouldn't think anything can happen in shallow water, but it can be very dangerous."

While the app is currently only available to Android users, there is a mobile web version also available.
