Fond du Lac area priest killed in traffic accident

Fond du Lac, Wis.(WFRV)--A Catholic priest from the Fond du Lac area was killed last night when his bicycle was struck by a car on Highway 151 in the Town of Taycheeda. Authorities tell Local Five News that Father Victor Capriolo of Malone riding a bike on the Prairie Trail and was crossing the highway right before 8 PM Wednesday night when he was struck by a car driven by a 74-year old Fond du Lac woman. Fr. Capriolo died at the scene.

Fr. Capriolo was a member of the clergy at Holy Family Catholic Church. He's being remembered as a compassionate pastor, dedicated to all he served in the archdiocese and beyond. We ask that his family and friends be kept in your prayers.

The Milwaukee Archdiocese released this statement today:

 "I was deeply saddened and shocked to learn about the tragic accident that took the life of Fr. Victor Capriolo last night in Fond du Lac," said Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki. "Fr. Vic had a passion for Catholic social teaching and an insatiable love for the Gospel. His parishioners and the people of Fond du Lac knew him as someone who would do anything to support the poor and the disenfranchised. We ask everyone to keep his family, friends and the parishioners of Holy Family Parish in their prayers."

There will be a prayer service tonight, Thursday, August 23, at 5:00 pm at St. Peter church. There is also a Mass in Spanish at 6:00 pm at Sacred Heart church. All churches in Fond du Lac will be open today for those who wish to pray for Fr. Capriolo and his family. St. Peter will close following the prayer service, but the other churches will be remain open until 10:00 pm. Counselors will be available starting Thursday afternoon at the parish center office at Holy Family church until 4:30pm.

There will be a visitation for Fr. Vic at Holy Family Church next Monday, August 27 from 2:00 - 7:00 pm with a vigil to follow at 7:00 pm in the church. Tuesday, August 28th, there will be more visitation at Holy Family Church from 9:00 - 11:00 am with the funeral to follow at 11:00 am at Holy Family Church.
