LITTLE SUAMICO, Wis. (WFRV) - Local 5 is continuing our monthly "We the People" series leading up to the presidential election.
TV stations, newspapers and websites around the state are profiling different families.
Local 5's family is from Little Suamico.
Cynthia and Ron Nelson have three kids.
They have republican views.
In this installment they share their take on education.
"The bullying the violence. You can't even go to school without being afraid of something. People will sit here and say it can't happen in our area but you just never know anymore" says Cynthia.
According to Ron " Schools right now they don't teach our religion what so ever. You can wear your hair in green, yellow but if you are found praying you are going to get sent to the principal's office or suspended".
Just some of the reasons the Nelson family recently decided homeschooling is for them.
"It is the same thing as somebody handling my stocks and finances for me. I think I can do a better job".
The couple feels teachers don't have freedom to run their classrooms effectively.
Ron says "It's completely manipulated. Kids are taught things in order to pass a test so the schools get their funding".
Cynthia agrees saying "They want certain achievement scores and say oh your child is behind if they are not reading at a certain level by a certain age. I think who is the government to put stereotypes on my child".
The couple won't see a financial benefit for homeschooling.
"The tax dollars that we pay in our property taxes will still go to school and I have no choice over that" explains Ron.
While their three boys won't be in the public system, Ron believes changes under governor Scott Walker will improve education in our state.
