Shawano County (WFRV)  Shawano County is testing a new natural treatment to control an invasive species damaging Wisconsin waters.

Zebra mussels are an aquatic invasive species which are now found in 120 Wisconsin inland waters.  They can disrupt lake ecosystems, kill native mussels, and litter shorelines with mounds of sharp shells.

Right now--- researchers are using a laboratory to conduct experiments to evaluate the use of Zequanox to treat zebra mussels on specific areas of Shawano Lake.

If the experimental treatment proves successful in the laboratory-- it may be used to control zebra mussels in targeted areas.
