GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) During National Suicide Prevention Week in Green Bay, dozens are learning a life saving skill. It's called QPR, which stands for question, persuade and refer. Think of it as the three steps to help identify and get help for those considering harming themselves.
So far, more than 6,000 in the Brown County area have gone through the training. Sadly, 28 suicides were reported last year in the county and this year there have been 17 deaths. Organizers say it's important to talk about suicide, to help erase social stigmas about the topic.
"Asking for help can be the most powerful tool that exists," says Crisis Councilor Chelsea Mcguire.
Experts say they're seeing an increase in the number of middle aged men attempting and completing suicide in Brown County. A poor economy is one reason given for the rise with this demographic.
