APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) Closure has finally come for an Appleton family. 18 year old Private First Class Arthur Hopfensperger was pronounced missing in action after serving only three months in North Korea - that was 62 years ago.
Back home his cousin, Elayne Lastofka, says the uncertainty left a big hole in the family. Hopfensperger's remains were found two years ago by a farmer in North Korea. Through DNA testing, Army Investigators were only recently able to get a positive ID.
"We just never knew. We just never thought we'd find him," says Lastofka. "We were really amazed they found him."
Hopfensperger's remains will be returned to the family within the next three weeks. Family members plan on burying him in Appleton.
