Green Bay women's basketball releases 2012-2013 schedule

By: Nick Goddard
Updated: September 17, 2012

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay women's basketball head coach Kevin Borseth released his team's 2012-13 schedule on Monday, a 30-game schedule which features six nonconference opponents that appeared in postseason play last season. Four of Green Bay's first five opponents earned a spot in a postseason tournament in 2011-12. A complete list of the 2012-13 schedule can be found here.

For the 26th consecutive season, Green Bay tips off its season on the road. On Saturday, Nov. 10 the Phoenix travels to Northern Iowa for a 2:30 p.m. matinee, looking to extend its four-game winning streak against the Panthers. Northern Iowa enters the 2012-13 season as the Women's Basketball Invitational runner-up.

Green Bay will host Central Michigan in the first of a two-game series Saturday, Nov. 17 in its home opener at 2 p.m. at the Kress Events Center. The game will also be the first at the Kress for new head coach Kevin Borseth who leads the Phoenix for the second time in his career. Central Michigan finished its 2011-12 campaign with a 20-16 record after being edged out of the first round of the WNIT. It will be the first time in 19 years the two teams meet.

For the third consecutive season Green Bay will once again compete in a regular season tournament over the Thanksgiving holiday as it travels to Cancun, Mexico Nov. 22-24 for the Cancun Challenge, competing in three games in three days. The Phoenix will battle James Madison in the opening day game festivities at 5 p.m. before facing SEC opponent Missouri Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. Green Bay wraps up its play in the Cancun Challenge with a battle against Richmond at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 24.

While it will be the third time Green Bay and Missouri face each other on the court, the Phoenix has never played James Madison or Richmond who both played in the 2012 WNIT tournament. Richmond advanced to the second round while James Madison advanced to the championship game.

Green Bay makes a short return to the confines of the Kress Events Center on Friday, Nov. 30 when it hosts Indianapolis from the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 7 p.m.

Green Bay visits Central Michigan on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in its series finale at 11 a.m. CT before a quick turnaround to battle in-state rival Marquette on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. in Milwaukee.

For the fifth time in program history, Green Bay will face North Dakota State during regular season play. Owning a 4-0 record over the Bison, the Phoenix hosts the Summit League opponent Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Kress Events Center.

Green Bay will look to extend its winning streak to four games against in-state rival Wisconsin on Sunday, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m., pending a time change due to the Packers potential flex schedule.

After a short holiday break, Green Bay travels to Wichita State Sunday, Dec. 30 for its final nonconference road game of the season. The Shockers finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference last season while advancing to the second round of the WNIT. The Contest will be the third meeting between the two teams and the first since 2002.

The nonconference slate concludes at the Kress Events Center and tips off a three-game homestand. Reigning Atlantic 10 Conference regular season champions St. Bonaventure will visit the Phoenix on Saturday, Jan. 5 for a 2:00 p.m. tip. Last season the Bonnies were edged in the A10 conference tournament championship game and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

For the third consecutive season Green Bay will open Horizon League play at home as it hosts Detroit Tuesday, Jan. 8 in a Horizon League Championship rematch. It will be the second time in three seasons the Phoenix will battle the Titans in its opening conference game.

The Phoenix hosts Wright State Saturday, Jan. 12 to wrap up its opening conference homestand before tipping off its longest road stretch of the season beginning at Cleveland State (Jan. 17) and Youngstown State (Jan. 19) followed by Valparaiso (Jan. 26) and Wright State (Jan. 28).

Five of Green Bay's games in the month of February will be played at home beginning with UIC (Feb. 2) before hitting the road to Loyola (Feb. 7). The Phoenix will then have a four-game homestand, its longest of the season, beginning with in-state rival Milwaukee (Feb. 9). Cleveland State and Youngstown State will visit the Kress Events Center Feb. 14 and Feb. 16 respectively before Valpo wraps up the homestand Feb. 23. Green Bay wraps up February competition on the road at Detroit on Feb. 28.

The final month of regular season Horizon League play for the Phoenix will feature a contest at UIC (March 2) before it hosts Loyola (March 7) in its regular season home finale. Green Bay wraps up its 2012-13 regular season schedule at Milwaukee March 9.

Green Bay will also play two exhibition games at the Kress Center to prepare for the 2012-13 season. On Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. Green Bay will host Judson in an exhibition contest before wrapping up exhibition play with a battle against Michigan Tech on Saturday, Nov. 3.
