GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) We're less than a week away from a critical meeting about Green Bay's controversial gasification plant. The trash-to-energy facility is proposed by the Oneida Seven Generations Corporation. Citizens delivered public comments to the city's Planning Director on Wednesday.
They worry the plant has more smokestacks then they were originally told. Opponents say there's also concern because similar plants across the country have been fined or shut down.
"There would be no emissions, it's a closed loop system, no smokestacks. Well, those things proved to be not true," says Dean Hoegger, the President of the Clean Water Action Council of N.E.W..
The city agreed to the October 3rd meeting months ago. It will be at 5:30 at City Hall.
Meanwhile, Kevin Cornelius, CEO of Oneida Seven Generations Corporation, released this statement to Local 5:
"We worked closely and cooperatively with city in the weeks leading up to the permit application and believe the plan commission, as well as the city, had everything needed to make an informed decision. We do not believe there is any reason to revoke the permit. When built, the facility will meet all of the conditions specified in the CUP, including receiving all necessary environmental permits and meeting city building codes."
In addition, the facility will provide good paying, permanent jobs, a payment in lieu in of taxes to city and reduce the amount of garbage going into our landfills."
