Last month, a dog nicknamed Chance by volunteers was found in a feces-filled crate in an Appleton business park.
Its believed Chance spent most of his 4 years in the crate and his back legs became deformed as a result.
Since coming the the shelter, Chance has gained 9 pounds, but still has a long recovery ahead of him.
Thousands of dollars are being raised for his surgery.
Fox Valley Humane Association Director, Deb Lewis, "Once he gets to a weight our vets feel is good, then he will have surgery and we'll start rehab. So it's going to be some time and we will have him for a long period before we find him a great home.
Volunteers expect it will be 9 months before Chance can be adopted.
