MANITOWOC, Wisc. (WFRV) The homeless may soon have a place to call home in Manitowoc.
The Haven of Manitowoc County, Incorporated has requested a conditional use permit from the city. They want to convert a home, located at 610 S. 29th Street, into a transitional housing establishment for homeless men.
"We have to care for our brothers and sisters, to make sure that they have a shot at life," said Mark Legreve, President of The Haven of Manitowoc County, Inc.
However, not everyone is on board with the idea. A letter, circulated by a group of "concerned citizens", states certain safety issues have not been addressed. They are concerned about increased crime in the area, the lack of professional services that will be available to the residents of the home, and security around the facility. They are also concerned about decreased property values that the shelter might bring.
The Mayor of Manitowoc is open to the idea.
"I think it is clear that there is a need, and we have a group of citizens who are willing and interested to help with that need in our community. So, my initial reaction is that it is a positive thing for the community," Mayor Justin Nickels said.
There will be a public informational hearing to discuss the conditional use permit at tonight's Plan Commission meeting. That meeting takes place at 6:30pm at Manitowoc City Hall.
