OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) Providing support to victims of sexual and domestic violence, Fox Valley residents are taking back the night. They're standing up and speaking out against abuse and sexual assault.
If you've been in Oshkosh recently, you've probably seen lots of purple cutouts of women scattered throughout the city. They represent some staggering statistics in Winnebago County. Organizers say more than 900 were arrested last year for domestic abuse or sexual assault.
Wednesday night, Take Back the Night hopes to draw attention to this problem by having victims and survivors come forward and tell their stories. One hurdle advocates say they still need to clear is how women are portrayed in movies, TV shows and music.
Workers with the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Center say everyone needs to educate themselves about the dangers of abusive relationships.
