ASHWAUBENON (WFRV) When teens want to connect with each other, texting is 'the' way to do it. But law enforcement officers try to emphasize that texting and driving don't mix.

"The human mind cannot focus on two things at once," said Capt. Randy Schultz, of the Brown County Sheriff's Department Patrol Division.

So some Ashwaubenon High School students in Jason Dreier's sociology class decided they could get that warning to their peers more effectively.

"People like the idea that we're trying to use social media in a positive light for such an important message for the community," said Austin Kadluski, Ashwaubenon High School senior.

So students made a video that takes a tongue in cheek view of situations where texting is risky. The next step was to link people to the video as quickly as possible.

"A lot of kids, after the video was finished, got out their smart phone right away and starting posting it on "Facebook" posting it on "Twitter"," Dreier said.

So far, the video has about a thousand hits on "YouTube.

"They're like "LOL" this is funny. Stuff like that. They mention certain scenes like "Oh your football scene is hilarious," said Katherine Enderby, Ashwaubenon High School junior.

But it ends with sobering statistics on texting and driving casualties. And the overall effort gets big support from law enforcement.

"It makes a statement from that generation also that this is unacceptable behavior," said Capt. Schultz.

Dreier and his students hope to get 250-thousand hits before the semester break. They're getting help from the Brown County D.A.R.E parking area outside KMart, near Lambeau Field. Each patron gets a receipt with the hyperlink and smart phone scan code that will link directly to the YouTube website.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
