OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) We're taking a closer look tonight at the State Senate race in Wisconsin's 18th District. Incumbent Democrat Jessica King faces Fond du Lac City Council President Rick Gudex. We asked both candidates to explain how they'll put more Wisconsinites to work.
Jessica King says she'll support technical colleges and the UW System. King says many unemployed workers lack specific skills needed to fill nearly 40,000 job vacancies across the state. She prides herself as someone who has reached across the aisle in her short time in office.
Meanwhile, challenger Rick Gudex is looking to promote the state as a great place to do business. He's currently the Fond du Lac City Council President and is a production manager at a manufacturing company. While on the council, Gudex says he cast a vote to set up funding to keep Mercury Marine in town.
"We need to make sure we are supporting people and getting them access to the training they need so they can get to work today. If they are earning $30,000 - $60,000 a year -- that builds the economy and the tax base," King tells us.
Gudex counters by saying, "We need to fund partnerships and look for ways to help businesses by de-regulation and making it easier to do business here in Wisconsin."
Tonight on Local 5 News at ten in a special report from Your Local Election Headquarters, we'll uncover the truth behind controversial campaign attacks from both sides.
