Wisconsin veterans face high unemployment

Green Bay, Wis.(WFRV)--Greg LaPlant found himself 46 and unemployed about two years ago, after his business suffered from the recession.
Says LaPlant, "We just got through it. My wife, fortunately, works full time and we just muddled through."
LaPlant is an Army veteran, so he sought help at the Job Center with Veterans Services. But after a year and a half of searching, he still couldn't find work.
Says LaPlant, "Working with the Vets Services here to find work, it was tough going. So I decided to go back to school."
Through his school, he works part time at the Job Center, helping other veterans find work.
Jim Warner is a veteran himself who is dedicated to helping veterans get back in the workforce.
At the Job Center, they see anywhere from 30 to 40 veterans every week.
Every other Tuesday, they hold a workshop where veterans kind find help with resumes, cover letters, and interviewing skills.
Veterans range in age from early 20's all the way to 70 years old. And while the resources have improved, all the needs aren't being met, according to Dave Behrend.
Behrend works for the VFW, or Veterans of Foreign Wars. He says most don't realize how big of a problem it is, in part because many veterans are underemployed.
