Pinterest helps stumped holiday shoppers

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - A popular social media site, Pinterest, can help you take the guesswork out of holiday shopping.

"I think it is one of the greatest sites out there in terms of creativity and ideas. It is great for people on budgets, to make things that you cannot afford to purchase" says Dana Tschirgi.

She is a passionate crafter, with more than 900 ideas saved to her Pinterest boards.

The site allows you to save and organize photos on a virtual scrapbook. Each "pin" links back to the site it came from.

"I use it for recipes and inspirational craft ideas" Tschirgi says.

This time of year, she is also using it for gifts.

"If you want to know what your sister wants for Christmas go check out her Pinterest page and see what she is into" says Shelley Nystrom, Owner of Eco Candle Co.

The downtown Appleton store uses Pinterest to show off products and promote a green lifestyle.

"We pin some ideas on how to recycle some of our jars. Mason jars are a big thing" explains Nystrom.

It is all about networking.

For example, Eco Candle pinned a gift idea, which was re-pinned by Appleton Downtown Incorporated.

"It works out well to find out what people are interested in and what is the hot topic right now" says ADI marketing director Anne Wiegman.

Giving people the tools to pin what they like, then come purchase it.

"It just hits so many people, people you would not normally see in a day" says Nystrom.

In the busy holiday season, a word of warning, this site can suck you in.

"One thing leads to another" says Tschirgi. "You find one ideas and you want to look up more or the best one".

Pinterest now allows people to have up to 3 secret boards, so you can plan your holiday shopping without ruining any surprises.
