St. Norbert men's, women's basketball sweep Beloit

DE PERE (St. Norbert Athletics) - St. Norbert College held Beloit College to just 32.7 percent shooting from the floor as the Green Knights rolled to a 66-49 win over the Buccaneers in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (2-1, 1-0 MWC) limited Beloit to making just 17 of 52 shots from the field, including only 9 of 29 in the second half as St. Norbert pulled away. It marked the 24th time in Gary Grzesk's seven-year coaching tenure St. Norbert has held an opponent to 50 points or less.

St. Norbert held a 12-8 lead with 10:49 left in the first half before the Green Knights got four points out of Izaiah Anderson during a 6-0 run for an 18-8 edge with 8:24 edge. Beloit got back to within eight late in the first half at 22-14, but consecutive 3-pointers by Jeremy Paprocki and Andy Fox bumped the lead back to 28-14. The Green Knights settled on a 33-22 lead at halftime.

The Green Knights harried Beloit into three turnovers and two missed shots on its first five second-half possessions as St. Norbert led 39-22 with 16:47 left. Beloit would not get closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as the Green Knights were in the bonus just 6:11 into the second half.

Brandon Gries led St. Norbert with 14 points, while Andrew Schwoerer netted 13 points and Fox 10. Anderson finished with eight points and eight rebounds. The Green Knights shot 41.7 percent from the floor, making 20 of 48 field goals. St. Norbert committed just nine turnovers.

Steve McAfee led Beloit with 16 points and nine rebounds, while James Lazarcik had 13 points and nine rebounds. The Buccaneers outrebounded the Green Knights 37-32.

St. Norbert Women 71, Beloit 44

DE PERE (St. Norbert Athletics) - A 19-0 run bridging both halves led St. Norbert College to a 71-44 win over Beloit College in a Midwest Conference opener for both teams on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (4-0, 1-0 MWC) trailed 30-25 with 2:27 left before halftime before going on a 10-0 run to snatch a 35-30 lead at the break. Morgan Heim and Heidi Van Sistine had four points each during the run, while Kyra VandenHeuvel added a pair of free throws.

St. Norbert, ranked No. 25 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, then opened the second half on a 9-0 run, taking a 44-30 lead with 15:48 left on an Amy Wieting hoop. The Buccaneers wouldn't break the ice in the second half until Lauren McNanna canned a 3-pointer with 13:36 to go, but the visitors would get no closer.

Thirteen different players cracked the scoring column for the Green Knights. Krista Hawkinson scored 20 points to be the only St. Norbert player in double figures. Wieting added eight points and seven rebounds, while Van Sistine had eight points and four rebounds. Tasha Giese finished with six points and eight rebounds. St. Norbert shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61 from the floor).

Beloit (1-3, 0-1) was led by McNanna's 15 points, while Kandace Fox added 12 points. The Buccaneers shot 31.9 percent (15-for-47) from the floor after opening the game 8-for-10 from the field. Beloit made just 4 of 25 (16.0 percent) of its shots in the second half.
