Governor says same day voter registration too costly

GREEN BAY (WFRV) The state Government Accountability Board studied a proposal to end same day voter registration. The final report found it would cost the state five-point-two million dollars up front to shut down the process. Governor Walker now says he won't sign any bill with that kind of price tag. Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch agreed that the effort would come with other costs.

"Well same day registration is kind of off topic, to be honest with you. The topic we're talking about right now is jobs," she said.

One area assembly Republican disagrees. He calls the current set up cumbersome. He added people who are serious about voting, should register in person well before election day.

"They should be registered. It should be one of the things, when they move into an area, or they're going to be in that area, they should participate in that area and they should vote in that area and know about what they're voting for," said Rep. Karl Van Roy, (R) Green Bay.

But an area Democratic state senator says same day registration has made voting more convenient for hundreds of thousands of residents. He agrees elimination comes with hidden costs.

"It would cost five-point-two million dollars up front and two-million every two years after that, and today the governor has said he's doesn't want to spend that kind of money," said Sen. Dave Hansen, (D) Green Bay.

Others lawmakers, like Rep. Jon Richards, (D) Milwaukee, hope the governor goes a step further and says, on the record that he would veto and bill that would end same day voting registration.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
