Discussion continues over proposed mining bill

By: Adam Van Vreede
Updated: January 22, 2013
(WFRV) -- Tuesday, the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce held a teleconference to debunk myths about a proposed mining bill in Wisconsin.

WMC environmental leaders assured the bill won't roll back environmental standards, and prominent lakes will not be filled in.

They also addressed concerns over sulfide being found at mining sites and the impact on water quality.

WMC officials emphasize this can be a bill all sides agree on, including potential mining company Gogebic Taconite.

However, that bill may not be the only option.

Another mining bill has been unveiled by Democratic Senator Tim Cullen. His version of the bill creates a two-year permitting process and would meet environmental standards. It would also ensure cooperation between the mining applicant, the DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

A joint committee hearing will be held for the original bill tomorrow in Madison.  For more information from the WMC, click here: http://www.wmc.org/issues/the-truth-about-iron-mining-legislation-questions-and-answers-on-environmental-regulations/
