Fighting Fires and the Cold

The job is never easy, but sub zero temperatures have made things a lot harder for the Green Bay Metro Fire Department.

A late night call at 2439 West Point Road left them battling a blaze, the weather and other self-made obstacles. "We create an ice rink wherever we go," says Lt. Nick Craig. You can also add compromised equipment to the list. Craig says it's not uncommon for their hoses to freeze.

To help keep them safe, precautions are taken. The firemen wear special tracks on their shoes and the fire chiefs rotate crews more often. This gives them time to warm up in the back of an ambulance. They also recommend carrying cold weather bags with an extra pair of socks, gloves and long underwear. Anything to help fight fire and ice at the exact same time.
