GREEN BAY, Wis (WFRV) Ice carving is not easy. There is a lot of sawing, sanding and measuring, but even the pros have to be careful.

"The biggest think is just making sure that all your joints are nice and clean and strong, you know, just so the thing doesn't come apart," says Paul Salmon, an ice sculptor of 25-years.

Salmon's company, Krystal Kleer Ice Sculptures, has been tasked with carving the ice throne for Winterfest this Saturday.

"People can come and get their picture taken sitting in the thrown and this year it's going to have a 10th anniversary theme," says Salmon.

The throne will take about a day and a half to finish. The sculpture is the first of many that will line Broadway this weekend. Winterfest, put on by Green Bay's On Broadway, will feature family friendly outdoor winter activities.

"It's a way to really enjoy the outdoors if your not an avid skier or hunter, so it's a way to come down and find some time with the family to be outside," says On Broadway's Tara Gokey.

One of the main events Saturday is an ice sculpting contest. Competitors will have from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to create their masterpiece. Judges will be on hand to pick a winner that night.

Salmon's ice throne won't be part of the competition, but he does have a tip for beginners.

"One of the best things to do is pick a design that's easily recognizable at first glance," he says.

Competitors will be vying for a cash prize of $200.
