Ravens win wild Super Bowl over 49ers

By: Nick Goddard
Updated: February 4, 2013
In a game which literally had it all, the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31, in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday night in New Orleans.

It's the second Super Bowl title for the Ravens, who previously took home the Vince Lombardi Trophy 12 years ago following Super Bowl XXXV.

Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco was named the game's MVP, after throwing for 287 yards and three touchdowns, all of which came in the first half as the Ravens took a 21-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Then on the second half kickoff, Baltimore's Jacobi Jones scored on a 108 yard return, seemingly putting the game away for the Ravens at 28-6.

However, just as it appeared the lights had gone out on the 49ers' season, the lights in half of the Superdome literally went out, causing a 34 minute delay.

When the lights went back on, the 49ers got back in the game, thanks to the improved play of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who threw for a touchdown and ran for another score, which pulled San Francisco within two at 31-29.

The 49ers couldn't convert a two-point try that would have tied things up, however.  The Ravens then kicked a field goal to extend the lead to five, and stopped San Francisco on a 4th and goal play with under two minutes left.
