DNA testing brings new leads in Waupaca Co. cold cases

WAUPACA (WFRV) The abduction and rape of a 20-year-old woman at this Iola park in November 1990 is among the cold cases the Waupaca County Sheriff's Department asked the Department of Criminal Investigation to help with. Those combined efforts, along with improved DNA analysis led to a suspect. Glendon Gouker, a former Waupaca County man on trial for another crime in Oklahoma.

"A September 2011 report from the Wisconsin State Crime Lab,, a DNA analysis of the evidence submitted to the lab from the sexual assault collection kit, indicates Gouker is a contributor to the DNA found in the kit.," said Waupaca County Sheriff Brad Hardel.

Sheriff Hardel says Gouker is due to appear in court on Thursday. But the new evidence in the sexual assault case shares some similarities with a 1992 double homicide near Weyauwega. 23-year-old Tanna Togstad and 35-year-old Tim Mumbrue were found murdered in Togstad's home north of Weyauwega.

"Togstad was also sexually assaulted and Mumbrue were stabbed to death in Togstad's farm house. Gouker has been identified as a person of interest in this homicide investigation," Sheriff Hardel said.

As an ongoing investigation, the sheriff's department and DCI are releasing few other details about possible connections. But investigators believe some people still living in Waupaca County have information on the Togstad and Mumbrue killings. They plan to put up a billboard, with a phone number and a link to a Facebook site to leave information anonymously.

"We're now looking at the community for the tips to identify and match the DNA left at the crime scene," Sheriff Hardel said.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
