U.S. Postal Service ending Saturday mail service

GREEN BAY (WFRV) Saturday visits by the mail carrier will become a thing of the past this summer. With nearly 16-billion dollars in losses last year alone, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says cutting service is unavoidable.

"It would be irresponsible for the postal service not to pursue this course. We are in a position were we have to make some tough choices and decisions," Donahoe said at a news conference

Going from a six-day to five-day delivery schedule will save the postal service two-billion dollars yearly. That prospect is being well received by some local postal customers, while others would like to see service expanded.

"I think they should deliver mail six-days a week. It should go seven days a week because everybody's waiting for a piece of mail. It could be very important," said Guadalupe Lopez of Green Bay.

"I think if we can save money for the United States, I think that sounds great," said Katie Reber of Green Bay.

The cutbacks won't affect post office branches that are currently open on saturday or postal service package deliveries. Some residents say waiting until Monday won't be a big inconvenience and there are other options to send important mail.

"Then I think, at that point, somebody's going to make a decision to send it a different method. You know, FedEx," said Terry Griffith of Green Bay.

"Well, I'm rather indifferent. I mean if it's one less day of getting bills, that's okay But I guess come Monday there's going to be twice as much junk mail," said Kathy Benoit of Green Bay.

Local 5's Terry Kovarik has the story.
