DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) In a follow-up to a story we first brought you in December, a De Pere athlete is back home after competing on an international stage. 22 year old Alex Guild represented Team USA in the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea.
Last week, Alex took home two medals: a silver for the 5K Snowshoe Race - which he completed in 29 minutes and 10 seconds. He scored a bronze in the 1600 Meter Snowshoe Race with a time of seven minutes and 36 seconds.
"I know there were a couple of guy ahead of me. I had to stay focused - say 'don't give up, keep going,'" Alex recalls.
When he was a child, Alex suffered from a neurological disorder that prevented him from feeling the ground beneath his feet. After extensive occupational therapy, Alex made a remarkable turn-around.
He now runs 20 miles every day.
