UW-Oshkosh Womens Basketball Completes Record Turnaround

The UW-Oshkosh Women's Basketball team has won more games this season, than in the last three seasons combined.
"I'm so proud of them," first year Head Coach Brad Fischer said. "I don't think even in our best expectations, we thought we could be in this position."
In his first year as head coach of the UW-Oshkosh Women's Basketball team, Brad Fischer has taken a Titans team that won one WIAC game a year ago, and turned them into 20-5 overall squad that's gone 12-and-4 in conference play. That is the largest turnaround in league history.
"The thing we always say is you never have to be the best team in the league on a given night, you just have to be the best team in the gym," said Fischer. "I think we've really taken to that. It's just two of us playing in the gym. If we just concentrate and follow through on the game plan, we have a chance to win every game."
The Titans finished the regular season tied for second place, with signature wins over top-25 ranked teams UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point.
It's been a long road to success for former Oshkosh West standout Megan Wenig, who is one of only three seniors on the team. Wenig became just the 19th player in program history to net 1,000 career points earlier this year, but this team success tops all that.
"Coach (Fischer) always says just keep doing what we're doing," Wenig said. "That's been kind of our motto the whole year. It's definitely nice to have a fresh start, it was needed after three rough years. It's been great, this team we are all best friends on and off the court, and the coaches are great. It's been coming together for us."
One thing has been the biggest factor in the turnaround according to Fischer, who was an assistant at UW-Parkside and UW-La Crosse before taking over in Oshkosh.
"I've coached a lot of really, really good teams, NCAA Tournament teams," Fischer said. "That haven't been as consistent as we have been and that's probably what I've been most proud of. A team that hasn't had a lot success and hasn't experienced winning a lot, to be able to come out every day, practice included to keep grinding and getting better."
They hope to keep grinding all the way to the D-3 NCAA Tournament. UW-Oshkosh earned a bye in the first round of the WIAC Tournament and they get to play at home Saturday where they are 9-0 this season.
"I couldn't be more proud of our team and what we've accomplished this year," says Wenig. "But we also have a lot left to accomplish."
