OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) The 2013 sturgeon spearing season is officially in the books. A total of 567 fish were harvested. That's one more fish than in 2012. 306 fish were taken by spearers on Lake Winnebago. A big-fish trend continued this year with 29 sturgeon weighing 100 pounds or more. Officials say that's a new record.
"Looking back ten years ago, if we had 1 or 2% of the total harvest in a year that were over 100 lbs, that was a really good year. We just had a lot of large fish harvested including a 179 lb fish that was harvested on opening day," explains Winnebago Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs.
The DNR will release a final sturgeon spearing summary soon.
