OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) Families worried they won't be able to send their children to the new Oaklawn Elementary School in Oshkosh are breathing a sigh of relief tonight. When the Oshkosh School District recently announced redistricting plans, 14 current Oaklawn students fell outside the new attendance area. After fighting for years to get a new school built, those families would have been sent to another school in the district.
A referendum to build a new Oaklawn passed by a two to one margin last April. The $13 million plan will replace a building that had a leaky roof and cramped classrooms.
After several passionate pleas from parents at Wednesday's school board meeting, administrators changed the proposal to allow them to continue at Oaklawn. Superintendent Stan Mack says the change will allow students at the K-5 facility to "mature through elementary school" and be "grandfathered" in to the new boundaries.
Even with the new Oaklawn, there are concerns about over-crowding. Next fall, all north side schools will operate near capacity except Oaklawn. District leaders hope to keep the capacity there at around 85%, anticipating new families will move to the area to attend Oaklawn within the first two years it's open.
