BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - Thursday night marked the first time both the Brown and Manitowoc County OWI Task Forces took to the streets during the week. It's part of a new strategy the departments are using to deter drunk driving on another level.

Brown County Sheriff's Captain Randy Schultz called the first two years of the county's OWI Task Force successful. More than 60 deployments resulted in nearly 2,000 citations.

Now they're trying a new tactic.

"I think what we did from the start, these first two years, is attack our worst times and days of the week," Capt. Schultz said. "But law enforcement has always known, by just using that slang of 'Thirsty Thursdays,' that this stuff happens. That's a more frequent issue there on Thursday evenings into Friday mornings also, just like the weekends are."

Officers in Ashwaubenon made an unexpected find. After nabbing a driver for second offense OWI , a search of the vehicle led to drugs.

"It was 33.3 grams of marijuana, packaging materials, digital scale and a glass pipe," Capt. Schultz said.

"So those kinds of things we also run into when we're making this effort. It's not just this narrow scope of attacking OWI."

Officials say more weeknight deployment are planned for the future.
