Indoor skate park gets huge donation

GREEN BAY, Wis (WFRV) A local grassroots organization wants to give skateboarders a place to go during the winter, but a lack of fundraising put the plan on hold. Now, a huge donation is giving the plan new life.

Shy Galiano hasn't touched a skateboard in months and he's rusty.

"I'm not really much of a skater during the winter cause I'm not a fan of the cold," says Galiano.

An indoor skate park could change that. Brian Schroeder runs the Green Bay Action Sports Organization. He wants to build one in Green Bay, but raising money has been tough.

"January for me was, alright, what are we going to do?" says Schroeder.

But then, a skate park in northwest Wisconsin made Brian a generous offer.

"She agreed to donate the entire indoor 11,000 square foot skate park, along with their entire outdoor set up as well," says Schroeder.

The news has Galiano and his friends excited.

"A lot of people have been talking about it at East and here and Aldo," says Galiano.

There's only one problem.

"The most frequently asked question when I say, hey we're getting this skate park is, where you going to put it?" says Schroeder.

Schroeder says he is working with realtors to find a space.

"Skating all year round would definitely bring more skaters in, and make almost everyone a better skater just period," says Galiano.

Trina Lambert is the principle at Aldo Leopold. She says skateboarding is popular there and sees potential in the park.

"In my wildest dreams it would be wonderful to see us in the future to have an opportunity to partner with them directly so that we might offer some enrichment opportunities to our students and maybe even some physics and science classes on site at the new facility," says Lambert.

"We want to open this up and have it be something where families can come and enjoy and stay active," says Schroeder.

Galiano says he can't wait.

"You have the whole extra season to skate, and I think it would be a really good time," he says.

Brian says he plans to transport the skateboard ramps from the camp to Green Bay sometime this summer.
