Larry McCarren's Training Camp Report / August 31, 2010

By:
Updated: November 29, -0001
The Packers got down to the 75 player roster limit this afternoon by making extensive use of the Reserve / Physically Unable to Perform List. Al Harris, Atari Bigby and 6th rounder James Starks were all placed on it. None will be eligible to play for the first 6 weeks of the season. The only surprise, and a mild one at that, was the inclusion of Harris. By all reports, and having seen Harris himself, his rehab is going extremely well. There was hope he may have returned, at least for practice purposes, by the league opener. The team, however, always errs on the side of caution when it comes to injuries and Harris is coming off major, major knee surgery. Sam Shields, get ready to buckle it up and screw it on tight at nickel back. The teams other move was placing rookie free agent running back Quinn Porter on injured reserve. That means his season is over. Porter suffered a significant knee sprain vs. the Colts and has been wearing a brace while watching drills this week. The Packers wrapped up practice for the Chiefs game this morning and legendary wrestler Dan Gable was among the faces in the crowd. He won 2 NCAA titles at Iowa state and his career collegiate record was 181-1. The only match he lost was his last. Gable went on to win a gold medal in the '72 Olympics and didn't allow a single point to be scored against him throughout the competition. He also won 15 national titles as the head coach at Iowa. Gable spoke to the team this morning and I would think it listened closely. Quite a man. Other than that, the practice was about getting the backups ready to play and play a lot vs. the Chiefs. One worth rooting for is Charlie Peprah. The veteran safety has quietly had a good camp and he's not bashful about sticking his nose in there when it comes to the rough stuff. Good special teams guy too. One of the draft choices who's been making some positive noise lately is 5th rounder Andrew Quarless. He had a nice TD catch against Indy and then made a couple more during Red Zone work today. At 6'4" 250, he's got Jermichael Finley like dimensions. While he doesn't run quite as well, he still runs well for a man that size. Quarless is hardly the finished product, Mike McCarthy said as much today, and the team is well-stocked at his position, but you can't help but notice his potential. It'll be interesting to see how Justin Harrell plays in Kansas City. He hasn't been missing practice, and at least that's a step in the right direction, but he also hasn't been showing up during games. Harrell was on the ground way too much in Seattle and didn't register a single tackle or assist vs. Indy. Being a former first rounder has bought him a lot of patience and it's about time for Harrell to start rewarding it. I've said before and I'll say it again, the guy does have ability. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect to Thursday's game is whether Jason Chery can win the Packers returner job. He didn't have a good day fielding kicks today but he'll get the chance to make amends against the Chiefs. This morning's practice was the last open to the public, and afterwards, players made their way over to the stands and thanked the fans for their support. Nice touch. This will also mark the end of our "Training Camp Report". What yours truly sees at practice from now on has to stay at practice. Football coaches have this thing about not letting their opponents know what they've got planned for them. Imagine that. Thanks for reading.
