State Senate passes sexual education bill

MADISON, Wis. (WFRV)-- The Wisconsin State Senate has passed a bill that will require state schools to promote abstinence as the only reliable way to prevent pregnancy.

The Republican backed bill does not require abstinence-only courses but does allow schools to offer those classes, something banned under current legislation.

Under current state law, schools are required to cover issues such as STD's and how to use birth control. The author of the new bill says this proposal provides schools with more freedom when designing their sexual education courses.

Planned Parenthood is calling the bill an extreme version of sex education and says it focuses on ideology, and ignores statistics that show comprehensive sex education works.

"This rolls back 20 years of progress, 20 years of research, it's anti-science," said Nicole Safar, Public Policy Director for Planned Parenthood, "To say that we are deeply disappointed is an understatement."

The Assembly now has the bill, and is expected to vote on it soon.
